The Best Man by Kristan Higgins

The book churns out emotions, drama, tragedy, and giggles at a breakneck pace. It is, I admit, entertaining. It is not, however, well-done. The Best Man isn’t a very good book. With editing, less condescension, and far less contrivance, it could have been a pretty good book.

Synopsis

Sometimes the best man is the one you least expect…

Faith Holland left her hometown after being jilted at the altar. Now a little older and wiser, she's ready to return to the Blue Heron Winery, her family's vineyard, to confront the ghosts of her past, and maybe enjoy a glass of red. After all, there's some great scenery there….

Like Levi Cooper, the local police chief—and best friend of her former fiancé. There's a lot about Levi that Faith never noticed, and it's not just those deep green eyes. The only catch is she's having a hard time forgetting that he helped ruin her wedding all those years ago. If she can find a minute amidst all her family drama to stop and smell the rosé, she just might find a reason to stay at Blue Heron, and finish that walk down the aisle.

Emotional resonance balances zany antics in a powerful story that feels completely real.

The writing is excellent, the plot is inventive, the characters are fascinating and the conclusion is always satisfying. All of this is true of The Best Man, except this time you have Levi as a bonus. What's not to like?

There are so many aspects of this book to love but the romance between Levi and Faith was absolutely perfectly imperfect.

...with a heroine who left me rather lukewarm and a hero who as the best of men had potential but their romance wasn’t explored enough, I felt that The Best Man wasn’t Kristan Higgins at her best.

The secondary characters were also amazing. Faith and Levi had a great set of people around them. Not one character, other than Levi’s father, did I not love.
