Dick Chandler, a young man in Hawaii, is befriended by two men who own the beautiful schooner, Black Rose, and is taken on his very first ocean sailing trip across the Pacific to China. The trip is filled with mystery, anxious moments and fear. Dick finally ends his association with the boat when he thinks back on his experiences sailing into an unknown dark river in China. The purposes of the boat's voyages became clear and later confirmed. Disappointed Dick felt it was best to abandon his new friends and the Black Rose before he became too involved.
