Both the text and art reinforce some unfortunate stereotypes: boys chasing girls with a worm, all three little girls in dresses, exclusively female teachers all wearing dresses, and boys treating girls like second-class citizens, with the girls accepting this status meekly.

When the teacher asks her students to name their pets, for instance, the boy answers that he has 39 goldfish and a parrot, then admits that he doesn't actually have any pets, but those are the pets that he would have if he did have any.
