From the plant's massive base in the middle of the room, thick vines and tentacles twirled and writhed in all directions. Tentacles of all sizes hugged the walls and wriggled along the ground. Some were as large as her forearm, and some were even as thick as her waist. Lya's knees weakened at thought of how much the alien plant had expanded in such a short time. She judged the plant had long reached its maturity, and if she hadn't known it to be true, she never would have guessed this to be the same plant as earlier.
Lya's hands left the wall. After she steadied herself once more, she took a few tiny steps into the chamber. She carefully avoided treading on any stray curly tendrils. A few twisted and wrapped around her calves as she entered the room. The wall reappeared behind her and sealed her in with the pulsating alien. Lya would have to study how the plant had swelled so quickly when exposed to so little source of energy. That she stood directly within the carnivorous plant's reach should have frightened her more. Yet the plant made no dangerous advances toward her. Instead, she found herself feeling another sensation much more base than simple fear.
If Lya had experienced a strange reaction in the presence of the caged plant before, the feeling grew tenfold in the absence of its energy barrier. Lya breathed deeply and quickly as though the air couldn't come fast enough. She slipped her lab coat from her hot body. Finding the room to be still too warm, she shed her solar-reflective bodysuit as well. The shimmery sliver material slipped to the floor and pooled at her feet.
