Caitlyn grew up in an age of scientific marvel. Ever since she heard about the first human colony being established on Mars at the tender age of five, she dreamed of nothing other than setting foot on the red planet. She knew it wasn’t too realistic – there were millions who wanted to go for everyone selected – but she had to try anyway.

At nineteen years old she gathered up the courage to apply and was shocked when she was subsequently accepted. She was so thrilled, in fact, that she neglected to carefully read over the terms of her contract. She kept her head down and her mouth shut, terrified that asking the wrong question might cause the offer to be rescinded.

Unfortunately for Caitlyn, by the time that she figured out what the term “breeder class” meant it was far too late to turn back. Trapped on a foreign planet, she had no choice but to accept the terms that were painfully spelled out for her by a cold, emotionless intake officer. Struggling to adjust, she discovered that colony was a harsh, unforgiving place where she would be denied even her most basic needs until she learned to accept her fate.
