Synopsis

A teenage adventure trip into the highlands of Scotland becomes a savage frenzy. Only one girl is unaffected: Beatha, a seventeen-year-old schizophrenic.
Struggling to understand what’s happened, Beatha comes to believe that an ancient magic has been unleashed, a magic capable of infecting the human soul with madness and violence.
When the authorities close in to ‘help’ Beatha, she attracts unexpected guardians: her nurse Mark, and teens James and Ailie. Fantasy and the supernatural abound as the gang travels across a physical and spiritual landscape littered with ancient magic, spirit tribes and alternate dimensions.
As Beatha evades the enemies closing in from every side, she is at once sustained and confused by the love and fear she evokes in those she meets. Especially the two very different young men now in her life—teenage romance is a complication Beatha doesn’t need.
Beatha races to take the ancient magic to a place of sanctuary, praying that her supernatural adventure will usher in a new age.
But as she struggles to differentiate between reality and fantasy, is she fighting to save humanity—or just finding a new way to be sane in an insane world?
This teenage action adventure delivers an intoxicating mix of romance, fantasy and supernatural which challenges what we mean by ‘sanity’.

Goodreads Reviews

"It is the achingly beautiful treatment Bonn gives to the point of view of his protagonist that will keep you reading."

"I would highly recommend this book to anyone. I already have acquired a copy of 'Expect Civilian Casualties' and I'm looking forward to sitting down and getting stuck into that one too."

"Most importantly for me, the characters, and the themes that emerged through the story, came across as deeply felt. I look forward to reading Gary's next book. "

"Possibly one of the strangest and most amazing books I have ever read."

"I find it amazing when an author can write from the perspective of a mentally disturbed person. How they manage to get inside the mind of someone like that and being able to get it right is truly awesome. Bonn has done that brilliantly."
