On one level it’s a gripping story of survival and the tenacity of the human spirit against all odds, but it’s also a hymn to hope, love and courage, delivered with all the warmth and wisdom we’ve come to expect from one of our most talented writers for children.

Katherine Rundell grew up in Africa and Europe and was elected a Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford. She begins each day with a cartwheel and believes that reading is almost exactly the same as cartwheeling: It turns the world upside down and leaves you breathless. Rooftoppers was inspired by summers spent working in Paris, where at night, she trespassed on rooftops.

With its fine balance of menace and cheer, though, “The Explorer” is perfectly suited to its middle-grade audience. It is a book to kindle imaginations.
