Synopsis

Look out for Jojo’s new book, Paris for One and Other Stories, coming October 18, 2016.

Another New York Times bestseller by the author of Me Before You, After You, and One Plus One—a spellbinding story of two women united in their fight for what they love most.

Jojo Moyes’s word-of-mouth bestseller, Me Before You, catapulted her to wide critical acclaim and struck a chord with a wide range of readers everywhere. Now, with The Girl You Left Behind, Moyes returns with another irresistible heartbreaker—a breathtaking story of love, loss, and sacrifice told with her signature ability to capture our hearts.

Paris, 1916. Sophie Lefèvre must keep her family safe while her adored husband, Édouard, fights at the front. When their town falls to the Germans in the midst of World War I, Sophie is forced to serve them every evening at her hotel. From the moment the new Kommandant sets eyes on Sophie’s portrait—painted by her artist husband—a dangerous obsession is born, one that will lead Sophie to make a dark and terrible decision. Almost a century later, Sophie’s portrait hangs in the home of Liv Halston, a wedding gift from her young husband before his sudden death. After a chance encounter reveals the portrait’s true worth, a battle begins over its troubled history and Liv’s world is turned upside all over again.

While Liv’s more pedestrian story is less romantic than Sophie’s and far less nuanced, Moyes is a born storyteller who makes it impossible not to care about her heroines.

An unfortunate coincidence twists the knife deeper, and Liv is forced to fight tooth and nail for what she has come to love most in the world. Lovely and wry, Moyes’s newest is captivating and bittersweet.

By the end, “The Girl You Left Behind” had become not just a picture-perfect historical novel, but also a true mystery-thriller. And I no longer cared how many romance novels Ms. Moyes had written.

...The Girl You Left Behind is a compelling exploration of love and the depths to which people will descend to protect that love...More importantly, while Liv’s story is the weaker of the two, it still makes for an amazing story of resilience and the most profound elements of love.

Moyes plunges you immediately into the story, and from the very first page you will not want to put this book down. Her classic writing style, well-drawn characters, and exact right pacing combine to carry you along on a journey that is suspenseful, dramatic, and eminently satisfying.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel. It was a splendid mix of historical romance meets modern day romance with a European setting. I appreciate unpredictable clever stories with a well-concluded ending. Moyes is quickly turning out to be one of my new favorite authors.

The issues raised in this novel are fascinating, and I felt that rather than exploring them more fully, Moyes only presented one side of the story in order to buttress Liv’s actions.

Overall, The Girl You Left Behind by Jojo Moyes was an extremely enjoyable read. As soon as I settled into Sophie’s story, I knew I had to set the novel aside until my kids were in bed. If I hadn’t done that, my kids might not have been fed dinner that day.

A thoroughly entertaining read with a great mix of romance, mystery and history.
