This is a story about a war, and Collins doesn’t pull any punches. I found her conclusion entirely appropriate, but if you require a happy ending, this is not the series for you. Ultimately, “The Hunger Games” is about standing up for what you know is right, even at a terrible cost.

...the detailed writing, the development of the characters, and the terrible familiarity of this dystopian society will keep you reading late into the night.

Add a few more elements, such as an obsession with food and a star-crossed romance and it's clear to see that this heady mix ticks a lot of boxes for a young audience.

From the first chapter you are drawn into Katniss Everdeen's life. This is not only a highly original plot set in a credible socio-political world, it is also very well written, unfolding at a satisfying pace and with surprising twists.

But there is great value in opening one's mind, and this book/movie franchise really is that good. But anyway, that's not why I'm picking it as my favorite for 2013. I'm picking it because it has inspiration to offer. It's a story about hope for the future. And I think 2013 was a mockingjay year.

The third book puts a bit of a wrench in what otherwise would be an absolutely fantastic trilogy...But regardless of its shortcomings, this trilogy cynically and beautifully reflects the times we live in.

Suzanne has written a masterpiece, where the many characters have been written extremely well, and features many strong themes that sometimes must be faced when you’re trying to survive...Because trust me, once you’ve read these books, you’ll want to read them over and over again.

Of the three books, I'd say that the first book was my favorite. Here we're introduced to Ms. Katniss Everdeen, her family...In the second book, aptly named Catching Fire, we experience consequence...Although I really enjoyed the final book, I felt like the pacing seemed rushed.
