Caroline Windsor, educated, cultured, professional, even at the age of 53 cannot accept the fact that she is an insignificant “nobody.” She has only one ambition in life: to be famous and acclaimed by the world for some exceptional, inimitable achievement. In a race with time, she is a driven, obsessed woman, still striving for her life of fame, glamour and glory. Unsuccessful, but believing herself only temporarily thwarted in her quest, Caroline devises an imaginative plan to seek a substitute goal: the adoration and worship of a young man—an impassioned love affair with a youth who will worship her, thrill her and breathe emotional life into her dull, sterile and conventional existence. With this plan in hand, she embarks on what becomes an eleven year odyssey of encounters with young men at her apartment. Year after year, hundreds of young fellows are swept her way to audition for the part, and Caroline unwittingly loses her way as she becomes entangled with and endures the most bewildering, extraordinary, offbeat cast of characters in a series of dark, enigmatic events. But the question remains: Does Caroline ever achieve her fame? The book is a light-hearted romp with unique psychological and philosophical insights into love, life and the continual turbulence between the sexes.
