Thomas is a teen celebrity who lives in a world that most will never know. The first few years are like living in a dream. In the middle, a dark shade of gray settles over it all. Towards the end, he holds onto the dream with a death grip till it cannot be held onto any longer. As a young adult, out in the normal world without any clear sense of direction, he searches for new meaning to his life and a new path to go on. It is not easy, in a world of few allies and many who want to take advantage of him and only love him for the fantasy image he represents.

Thomas' story is paralleled by a separate story of a young boy who grows up in a pit. Many people look down at him in the pit, but he doesn't quite understand why. He is told that they adore him, but the reason is not clear to him. A bright light shines down on him at all times. Eventually, the pit spits him out into the vast wastelands above, and he is stuck wandering the world, seeking new shelter, being watched at all times by a massive crowd of faceless, blurred beings. Eventually, some people come along offering to help him. But can they truly be trusted? And what about the faceless man he sometimes sees staring in his direction, holding something in his hand...?
