Synopsis

Written in 1862, The Poet is a poetic drama which explores inspiration, spirituality, and woman's sphere. It tells the story of the making of a woman poet in the mid 1800s. The author, Miss Sprague, was a public speaker/ spiritual lecturer/ trance medium at a time when women had no legal rights. The Poet shows us many things about the thoughts of society at that time, especially regarding women. It also shows us what life may have been like for Achsa as she spoke before crowds - some hungering for spiritual direction, some out for an evening's entertainment, some curious about the "preaching woman," and others there to ridicule a woman out of her sphere.
