Synopsis

Tom Dreyfus is a Prefect, a law enforcement officer. His current case: investigating a murderous attack against one of the Glitter Band habitats that leaves nine hundred people dead. But then he uncovers an even greater threat-a covert plot by an enigmatic entity seeking nothing less than total control of the Glitter Band.

Alastair Reynolds was born in Wales in 1966, and he has a Ph.D. in astronomy. From 1991 to 2007, he lived in the Netherlands, where he was employed by the European Space Agency as an astrophysicist. He is now a full-time writer and he lives in Great Britain.

Alastair Reynolds has achieved fame and success with a brand of sci-fi which marries hard details (as in the police work and decisions required by it) with decent characterization and a detailed explanation of economy and society.

Strange Horizons

I have said little about the details of the plot, but Dreyfus's chapters are crammed to bursting with developments that are more than enough to sustain the novel, and to be dragged away from these to focus on the minor issues unbalances the novel and irritates the reader.
