The older woman merely shrugged her shoulders. “When two beautiful women ask to see me they are usually selling themselves. I can assure you that if you choose to work under my roof you will be well-rewarded, especially for a pair of exotics like yourselves.”
It was all Midori could do to prevent her lips from curling back in disgust. “No. I’m here to ask that you no longer allow my husband to patronize your house.”
The answer Madame Giallo gave was short and to the point. “No. Is there anything else I can help you with? I’m a busy woman.”
“But you haven’t even listened to my reasons—”
Giallo didn’t give her the opportunity to keep talking. “The Dancing Vixen pays all taxes, fees, licenses, and bribes when appropriate. We are a legal business operating within the walls of Yort and as such we are required to treat all those who seek our services equally—according to the money they pay us, of course.”
Midori frowned at the statement, but she knew it was true. “I could have your house shut down,” she threatened. “I have close ties to the rulers of this city.”
An amused smile pulled at Madame Giolla’s lips. “I doubt you have the ability to close down the most popular entertainment venue with our city’s ruling class, Princess Midori.”
