When a war of revenge moves to the house next door, a boy battling a school bully inadvertently gets involved, and everything changes. Fairy tales become real, revenge becomes a matter of life and death, monsters rule the night, genocide threatens and enemies become friends – or do they?
Ten-year-old Herbert finds himself a target of the school bully, Kyle. He escapes his tormentor by living in the library at break times and consuming books that transport him to fantasy worlds. This world becomes real when he meets a fairy creature. Through this meeting, Herbert learns of a world below ground, and realizes that the local gnome clan is in mortal danger from Thomas Fane, Herbert’s sinister new neighbour. Fane is The Collector, whose life has been unnaturally prolonged and this has twisted his mind into insanity.
A pact is formed between Herbert and the gnomes to help each other but it soon goes horribly wrong with consequences that no-one foresaw.
