Todd witnesses what appears to be a burglary, but no one believes him: his parents are initially willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, but the police are frankly skeptical and the owner of the house rudely denies that anything is missing.

(There's also an expletive that seems unnecessary for this age group.) Yet by the story's almost anticlimactic ending, Todd views his stepmother more as a helpful friend than a resented intruder, a welcome respite from the frequently stereotypic portrayal of beleaguered stepmothers.
