McCarthy was born in County Cork, Ireland. He attended St. Patrick's College Seminary in Ireland, and went on to gain his Master of Pastoral Studies at Loyola University in Chicago. He is a Catholic priest. Luminous paintings by Giuliano Ferri capture the wonder and joy of the birth of Jesus. Mr. Ferri lives in Italy.
