A Story of Betrayal, Revenge and Love. . .

Five years after she ran off to San Francisco with his cousin Brian, Harry Evers' wife Kate returns home in a coffin and with the label of suicide. Harry blames Brian and decides to investigate.

Kate's sister Annie lives in San Francisco and would prefer to settle Kate's estate without Harry. She knows he is by nature combative and that he has grown more so since Kate left him. He is a tavern habitue' and so quarrelsome he has fallen out with his dying father.

But Harry is an experienced investigator and over Annie's objection he goes to San Francisco. Early on he has a run-in with that city's police and he so angers Annie she will not speak to him. He pushes on and with insight only a husband could have he pieces together a compelling story of Kate's last days and her last night.
