Early in the 1980s, Gracie — a runaway, street girl, and stripper — loses Marcus, her best friend and lover, to AIDS. But just before he dies, Marcus makes Gracie promise to have a child in his memory.

It’s a promise she can’t break. So Gracie hits the road, looking for a man to father the child she’s terrified of having. From trailer park to small-town jail, from sordid clubs to the cab of an eighteen-wheeler, her journey is shadowed by danger, by nightmares, and by the terrible secret she’s never shared.

Friends, lovers, enemies —none of them can write their names on Gracie’s heart. As the miles pile up, and things get more desperate, Gracie finally has to wonder: Will this quest give her something to live for? Or will it be the death of her?
