Synopsis

It’s graduation day for sixteen-year-old Malencia Vale, and the entire Five Lakes Colony (the former Great Lakes) is celebrating. All Cia can think about—hope for—is whether she’ll be chosen for The Testing, a United Commonwealth program that selects the best and brightest new graduates to become possible leaders of the slowly revitalizing post-war civilization. When Cia is chosen, her father finally tells her about his own nightmarish half-memories of The Testing. Armed with his dire warnings (”Cia, trust no one”), she bravely heads off to Tosu City, far away from friends and family, perhaps forever. Danger, romance—and sheer terror—await.

Between the ruined world and the mutants, there’s plenty of threats to keep the pages turning. Though genre elements are in place, this page-turner earns an A for freshness.

As the promo on the shiny, electric blue cover suggests, this novel is clearly designed for a Hunger Games fan, and a few striking similarities between the stories of Malencia Vale and Katniss Everdeen can't help but make one feel a little disdain for an author trying to ride the wave of another's success.

And although The Testing, by Joelle Charbonneau, is certainly not one such novel that will go down in history, it is at least a very entertaining read, filled with suspense, intrigue, and all of the qualities expected in a dystopian thriller.

Highly, highly recommended grade 7-up. This is for fans of The Hunger Games, and may be the next "big thing."
