In Cold War Berlin, a Stasi agent is murdered by a man who speaks a language no one has ever heard before. The victim was carrying pictures, taken from lunar orbit, showing what seem to be railway tracks on the far side of the Moon. The Soviets are preparing a secret manned mission to the site - but nobody on the American side knows what they think they'll find there. Sam Holloway - a former spy, turned anthropologist and linguist - called in to identify the mysterious murderer's language, finds himself recruited into the pursuing American flotilla of armed Apollo spacecraft. It will be his job to make first contact with the builders.of the mysterious tracks, and decipher their strange language...
