In short, the answer to our original question is yes: Star Wars: Thrawn is a fun-to-read, entertaining adventure that not only does justice to the sprawling empire that is the Star Wars franchise but should also pull new readers into its considerable gravity well where they will inevitably reach out for more.

Synopsis

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In this definitive novel, readers will follow Thrawn’s rise to power—uncovering the events that created one of the most iconic villains in Star Wars history.

One of the most cunning and ruthless warriors in the history of the Galactic Empire, Grand Admiral Thrawn is also one of the most captivating characters in the Star Wars universe, from his introduction in bestselling author Timothy Zahn’s classic Heir to the Empire through his continuing adventures in Dark Force Rising, The Last Command, and beyond. But Thrawn’s origins and the story of his rise in the Imperial ranks have remained mysterious. Now, in Star Wars: Thrawn, Timothy Zahn chronicles the fateful events that launched the blue-skinned, red-eyed master of military strategy and lethal warfare into the highest realms of power—and infamy.

This trilogy brings back all that was positive in the movies without the bitter aftertaste of the prequels. The plotting and storytelling are good enough and the cat and mouse games played between the Grand Admiral Thrawn and the characters we are so familiar with is quite fun

This story is quite different in structure (since none of the Original Trilogy's heroes are present), but offers a more focused tale and gels nicely with recent books.

Star Wars: Thrawn is the I, Claudius of space opera at its finest.

Overall, Thrawn takes some familiarities, expands them, and paints an intimate portrait that gives new life to a beloved character. Zahn was obviously the ideal author for the task of both starting and continuing Thrawn’s story, and he delivered.
