The New York Times-bestselling author of Transcendence (Tarcher 2011), Dr. Norman E. Rosenthal attended the University of the Witwatersrand in his native South Africa, where he obtained his medical degree with high honors. He moved to the United States and was resident and chief resident at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital and the New York Psychiatric Institute. Beginning in 1979, he conducted research at the National Institute of Mental Health, as a Research Fellow, Researcher, and Senior Researcher for over twenty years. It was there that he first described and diagnosed Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Dr. Rosenthal is a clinical professor of psychiatry at Georgetown Medical School and has maintained a private practice in the Washington, DC metropolitan area for the past thirty years. He has received the prestigious Anna Monika Foundation Research prize for his contribution to research in treating depression and has been listed in The Best Doctors in America and the Consumers’ Research Council of America’s Guide to America’s Top Psychiatrists. Rosenthal is the author or co-author of over 200 professional articles and four popular books: Winter Blues; The Emotional Revolution; St. John's Wort; and How to Beat Jet Lag.  Rosenthal provides consultations to fellow clinicians, executives, and researchers.
