Pablo Neruda (1904-73), one of the renowned poets of the 20th Century, was born in Ferral, Chile. He shared the World Peace Prize with Paul Robeson and Pablo Picasso in 1950, and he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for his poetry in 1971. Colombian novelist Gabriel García Márquez once called him "the greatest poet of the 20th century in any language." Neruda always wrote in green ink as it was his personal color of hope. Neruda was hospitalized in 1973 with cancer at the time of the Chilean coup d'état led by Augusto Pinochet. Three days after being hospitalized, Neruda died of heart failure. Neruda owned three houses in Chile; today they are all open to the public as museums: La Chascona in Santiago, La Sebastiana in Valparaíso, and Casa de Isla Negra in Isla Negra, where he and Matilde Urrutia are buried. Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and essayist W. S. Merwin was born in New York City in 1927. Merwin has won numerous prizes, including the Tanning Prize, the Bollingen Prize and the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize. He is the author of fifteen books of poetry, numerous plays, nearly twenty books of translation and four books of prose. Merwin was named the 17th Library of Congress Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry.
