Vampire Academy is a solid addition to the teen paranormal market and a great first novel in a six-book series. The well-written romance and action will keep readers of all ages coming back for more...It’s enjoyable, quick, and a good bridge novel if you don’t read a lot of young-adult paranormal or urban fantasy.

Synopsis

The story that kicked off the international #1 bestselling Vampire Academy series is NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE!

St. Vladimir’s Academy isn’t just any boarding school—it’s a hidden place where vampires are educated in the ways of magic and half-human teens train to protect them. Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, a bodyguard for her best friend Lissa, a Moroi Vampire Princess. They’ve been on the run, but now they’re being dragged back to St. Vladimir’s—the very place where they’re most in danger. . . .

Rose and Lissa become enmeshed in forbidden romance, the Academy’s ruthless social scene, and unspeakable nighttime rituals. But they must be careful lest the Strigoi—the world’s fiercest and most dangerous vampires—make Lissa one of them forever.

The flow was solid. There was a little too much explanation at some points, but it helps immerse the reader fully in the Vampire Academy experience...The pacing levels out into beautiful writing and the story line keeps you guessing with some awesome twists. Get to it when you are in the mood for a vampire novel.

While the trailer for the movie makes it looks like a comedy, the novel's dark and full of Mean Girls-style high school bullying. The characters bicker from beginning to end, especially Rose. And there's violence...drinking, sex, and lots of strong language...

Vampire Academy is the best book series I have ever read. My friend introduced me to the books. I got hooked on the first page. Rose cares most about two people and two people only, Lissa and Dimitri. Both are different types of love but all the same. I would recommend this book to young adults from ages 13 and up.

I can see why this series is so popular and it’s bound to get a resurgence in that popularity when the movie is released...The book is filled with interesting characters and a great take on the vampire world – the Moroi are mortal and considered the ‘good’ way to be whereas the Strigoi are immortal and evil.

The book is low on gore and heavy on romance, with sexual tension between Rose and her older male mentor, and also between the two girls themselves. Graphic language, lots of promiscuity and some explicit sex scenes make the book most appropriate for a high school age teen, rather than the publisher's recommended age of twelve and up.
