Jan Faktor fulfills his dream and builds a three-unit rental building. His tenants—poor, working-class people—are treated well at first. Soon, however, Faktor imposes demands upon them: not allowing guests on the premises, restricting tenant access to the whole of the property, and even encouraging a mole to spy on the others in exchange for rent. They fearfully concede for a time, but then begin to take a stand. This darkly humorous novel is now available in English for the first time.
