Geling Yan was born in Shanghai and left China after the Tiananmen Square massacre. She is also the author of the acclaimed novel The Lost Daughter of Happiness and many short stories, including one that was made into the award-winning film Xiu Xiu: The Sent-Down Girl. Yan lives in San Francisco and Africa.
