For aspiring artist Amanda Walsh, who only half-jokingly goes by the nickname Zero, the summer before college was supposed to be fun-plain and simple. Hanging out with her best friend Jenn, going to clubs, painting, and counting down the days until her escape. But when must-have scholarship money doesn't materialize, and she has a falling out with Jenn that can only be described as majorly awkward, and Zero's parents relationship goes from tense to relentless... more
There was definite depth and growth within its pages and it’s more serious than your typical YA contemporary.
Full ReviewLeveen does a good job of expressing a young girl's point of view...It leads to hard decisions she has to make, which are probably very common for today's teenagers.
Full ReviewZero by Tom Leveen is real....Add to that a beautiful swirl of art and music, and you have one marvelous novel!
Full ReviewUnconventional compared to a lot of YA, Zero is stunning in it’s scope.
Full ReviewAs much as I would have loved to relate with the whole punk rock scene, it just didn’t happen
Full ReviewLeveen elevated the book’s appeal...mostly because he wrote a story with an ending -- a believable, authentic ending that developed naturally from the experiences Zero endured.
Full Review...the character growth was very strong and the end result was that Zero was a realistic and charming novel...
Full ReviewFitting quotations from Salvador Dalí, Amanda's artistic idol, head each chapter and reflect the unfolding story.
Full ReviewIt was unpredictable and different--the characters went down their own paths and there was just something really great about the whole atmosphere.
Full ReviewIf you're looking for a great summer read, look no further than this one.
Full ReviewThe characters were lovable and they all seem to grow in front of your eyes the more you read.
Full ReviewThe cussing and the awkward scenes, and Zero's tenancy to come off whiny are what brought it down for me.
Full ReviewZero amazed me...Tom Leveen wrote Zero’s story with a realistic and true perspective.
Full Review...while there is a fair amount of art and punk in the book, it is at its core a sweet story about a relationship and finding self worth.
Full ReviewOne of the most refreshing contemporary YA books of the year so far, hands down.
Full ReviewThis was a fun book to read too with many highs, many lows. Laugh out loud moments, oh my gosh - I can't believe that happened moments.
Full ReviewI can literally play the ending in my head over and over again. I understand it and have made peace with it.
Full ReviewZero was so real to me that I was amazed that Leveen could so thoroughly understand the inner workings of a teenage girl's mind.
Full ReviewZero could be you or me. This has to be the most attractive aspect of this story.
Full ReviewIf Leveen can write such a great female character then I am not surprised how much I also liked Mike.
Full ReviewI could have done without some of the side-plot, like the pregnancy scare. I felt it was unnecessary.
Full ReviewHowever, this book does have one major drawback: the plot. A whole lot of nothing goes on during the book.
Full ReviewI can think of a few ya characters who would not have made the same choices she did. If you are looking for a good contemporary read I highly reccomend this one.
Full Review... if Amanda is refreshing, Mike is, I don’t know, revolutionary, at least as far as romantic interests in YA come.
Full ReviewIt's kind of a complicated relationship that I have with this book, but a really satisfying one.
Full ReviewI liked this book because it was quirky, interesting, different, outside the box, sad, awkward, happy, sarcastic and funny...what could be better?
Full ReviewIt really is a must have book that is highly entertaining and gives a different look into a darker side of some teenagers lives.
