Drayton creates a conundrum in which she has made Perry’s unveiling as Hulme the center of the book...the author ably plumbs the Hulme story for how it has shaped Perry’s crime fiction...Occasionally uneven but a pleasure for Perry’s loyal fans and a book that is likely to win her some new ones as well.

The action is nonstop and the characters ring true. There is humor in abundance in this novel as Charlotte deals with a disapproving housekeeper, Mrs. Waterman, and has to rely on her beloved former servant to quickly find a replacement for Mrs. Waterman.
Lumbering, repetitive and preachy. But the final surprise packs a punch, and the overlong courtroom sequences show how much Perry’s learned about legal testimony since Cain His Brother...
